AWARENESS AND EDUCATION
Autism York sponsors a community awareness program entitled “Understanding Autism”. This service began in 2009 to provide the community much needed access to basic information about Autism. The goal of “Understanding Autism” is to provide accurate information, in order to increase understanding and promote acceptance of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Each presentation is tailored to fit the needs of the specific audience.
Who can benefit from Understanding Autism?
- Many children with ASD are being taught in inclusive settings. Increase staff knowledge and promote acceptance of those with differences within the student body.
- Families dealing with ASD desperately need the support of their family and friends. Help them understand the meaning and implications of the autism diagnosis.
- Many people with ASD participate in community service organizations such as Scouting or 4-H. We help leaders to recognize and effectively work with individuals on the Autism Spectrum and encourage other participants to welcome these children as equals in their groups.
- Learn what ASD means to your employee with a diagnosis or offer a Diversity Training about Autism for your entire staff.
- We can provide training to church leaders or to your congregation to better understand those who are affected by Autism in your church or in the community.
- Learn basic Autism information, ideas and suggestions about sensory defensiveness, and how to use a child’s interests to your advantage during an emergency situation.

* There is no charge for Understanding Autism services. Donations to Autism York are welcome, but not necessary.
